Alright, so I did say it would go down hill after the first two movies and I meant it. Spider-Man 3 is not as good as it’s predecessors. This movie is a culmination of some good ideas mixed with too many cooks in the kitchen (Raimi, and Sony executives). The movie tries to go down a dark path with the Venom Symbiote, introduce the new goblin that’s been brewing since the end of Spider-Man and introduces Sandman, who is now the killer of Uncle Ben. Did I mention that Eric Foreman is Venom? Let’s just get right to it.
What I liked:
The CGI as usual, was great.
J.K Simmons = still fantastic. He’s so good that he’s still playing the role in 2021 but that’s a story for another review.
I liked the black suit and the aggression when Peter goes after Sandman. I think it showed how human Peter is in wanting revenge.
I enjoyed all the scenes with Aunt May. She’s just too good and all her scenes felt very meaningful for Peter’s growth.
I enjoyed the end of the movie with Peter choosing to not use the black suit any more.
The end of black suit Spider-Man and the beginning of Venom. The bell tower scene in the church was great.
Harry Osborn new goblin. I liked the amnesia story line for Harry. This is a nod to the original comics where Norman lost his memory before getting it back and then killing Gwen Stacy.
I liked how Harry went after Peter mentally when he was trying to break him.
What I didn’t like:
Too many stories going on to really develop anything out. Sony executives should have stayed out of it but as you’ll see, for the next 3 movies, they don’t learn until we get to the MCU.
Dancing, Emo, Peter Parker. Great meme material though.
Mary Jane is the victim once again. 3 movies in and she’s fell to her death like 4 times now. Gwen Stacy even got to fall this movie!
Venom should have been introduced in Spider-Man 2 from JJ’s son coming back from space, not just magically falling near where Peter was.
Topher Grace as Eddie Brock was not awful but just not really great either. I wish the studio would have just picked 1 story to follow rather than 3. I do at least see what they were going with here
for Eddie. Basically a cocky nerd similar to how Peter was acting this movie, except Brock didn’t need the black goo to be unlikable.
Overall, this movie has good moments but ultimately, it’s a mess and a bit over the top on all ends. The cheesy jokes from the first two movies, I was ok with, this movie and it’s dance scenes were too much for me but I still love it.
2.5/5 stars.
