It looks like aliens have landed or are about to in this pic. Somehow, I imagined their ships would look more streamlined and advanced, or at least Star Warsy. Never in a million years would I have thought they would land in a big boat. Thankfully, for all of us, this is not the work of three-eyed little green men. Nor is it a case of a new way to avoid crashing into the shoreline.
The photographer, David Morris, captured a mirage known as a Superior Mirage. The mirage occurs according to the BBC story because, “a weather condition known as a temperature inversion, where cold air lies close to the sea with warmer air above it.
“Since cold air is denser than warm air, it bends light towards the eyes of someone standing on the ground or on the coast, changing how a distant object appears.
“Superior mirages can produce a few different types of images – here a distant ship appears to float high above its actual position, but sometimes an object below the horizon can become visible.”
Pretty neat stuff. Here’s the link to the story from the BBC.
